Solo Female Travel Tips for Tokyo: Everything You Need to Know

If there is anything I know in life, it’s that Tokyo is a city that is perfect for solo travelers. There is so much to see and do, I guarantee you that you will visit more than once. The city is very safe and easy to get around for solo and female solo travelers. Here are some tips for planning your trip to Tokyo:

  • While you can be spontaneous with your itineraries, you do need to do some research before you go. It’s a good idea to get to know the city to have an idea on you want to see and do.   • There are different type of tours, either all inclusive plan out or smaller day tours and excursions. I personally love to use Viator for excursions that are either day trips or half day trips. Tours will help you find the best places to visit, eat, and make certain trips possible that can be difficult as a solo traveler.

  • Learn some Japanese. I think the basics of “please” and “thank you” are great. It helps the local see that you’re being respectful. If you are able to speak more Japanese, it will will help you get around and communicate with locals. You can download a translation app on your phone such as Google Translate, it’s amazing because you can you typing, writing, or voice to translate. There is also an offline download capability, so you can ensure to have your translator with your at all times!

 

If you are on a budget, Tokyo has the best hostel or capsule hotel. Usually these hotels have every amenities you would ever need, and full floor to ceiling privacy showers, so while shower and restroom are share spaces, they are designed in maximal privacy. These hotels are a great way to meet other travelers and make friends. They are also usually very affordable, which is important for solo travelers.



  • Use public transportation. Public transportation is the best way to get around Tokyo. It's efficient, affordable, and easy to use. You can buy a Pasmo or Suica card, these are transportation card that you tap off for any ride you need on the subway, trains, and buses.

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Tokyo is a safe city, but it's always important to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. If you're feeling lost or uncomfortable, don't be afraid to ask for help.

  • Don't be afraid to do things alone. One of the best things about traveling solo is that you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. If you want to go to a museum, see a show, or just wander around, you can do it without having to worry about anyone else.

  • Meet up with other solo travelers. There are many websites and apps that connect solo travelers. This is a great way to meet people and make friends while you're traveling.

  • Tokyo can be rainy, so be prepared by packing an umbrella or raincoat. However, getting an umbrella in the convenient store is super easy.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you're lost or need help, don't be afraid to ask for help. Most people in Tokyo are very friendly and helpful.
